COTT is putting together a series of newbie clinics to help some of our newer members get acquainted with all things triathlon. As of now, we have 2 scheduled that will both cover slightly different topics, but with some overlap of the REALLY important stuff – it never hurts to reinforce the critical things. So for those of you that are interested, mark your calendars and let us know if you’re planning on attending.
Newbie Clinic #1 – (Please RSVP for this clinic directly to Stephanie Harless at skharless@hotmail.com.)
————————–
When: Sunday, April 29th – 9am (plan on 2 – 3 hours or so)
Where: Alum Creek Beach Parking Lot (map)
Who: New members thirsty for knowledge or existing members looking for a refresher.
What to bring: Your bike, cycling gear you’d usually need for a ride (shoes, helmet, etc), running shoes…
Stephanie Harless will be leading this clinic with help from Philip Kanjuka as well as myself. She’s planning on covering the following things, but is also interested in hearing from you guys on what additional topics you’re interested in hearing about…
- Basic bike handling
- Pace lining
- Road etiquette
- Bike gear must haves/what can you put on your “to buy later” list.
- Do I need a tri bike? Race wheels? Aero bars? And when to use them.
Please RSVP directly to Stephanie at (skharless@hotmail.com) as we’ll need to plan according to the number of attendees we’ll have.

Damage Control September 14, 2011

An article from our friends at Accelerade:
For many endurance athletes, pain is a point of pride. Competing through pain builds mental and physical toughness. What is often not realized is that during intense exercise your body releases cortisol. One of cortisol’s primary functions is to break down fat and protein so that these macronutrients can be converted into energy. The breakdown of protein results in muscle damage. Another activity of cortisol is to raise the pain threshold. From an evolutionary perspective this is extremely logical. Our Paleolithic ancestors weren’t concerned about exercise, but they were probably very concerned about outrunning predators. SEE MORE

The Endurance Herb August 23, 2011

An article from our friends at Accelerade:
Serious athletes looking for an edge often incorporate herbal products into their training and racing regimens. If you believe the manufacturers’ claims, there are many herb-based products that deliver a performance edge. All too often, however, claims of improved performance are based on anecdotal evidence rather than hard science. When there is hard science, the claims don’t hold up. A case in point is the research on two so-called endurance herbs, Cordyceps and Rhodiola. Cordyceps received a great deal of publicity in 1993 when it was credited with the world-record performance of the Chinese track team. The problem is that 29 of these athletes were subsequently found to be taking
steroids. SEE ENTIRE ARTICLE

COTT Needs YOU! July 13, 2011

The inaugural Giant Eagle Triathlon being put on by HFP racing on July 31st is shaping up to be a pretty sweet event. A large prize purse is attracting a good pro field and the point to point layout will allow for a unique view of the city rarely seen during your training and racing here in C-bus.
COTT is stepping up and offering help for the race. We will be partying like rockstars in and around T2. We will be operating the aid station as well as the bike hand off. We need your help. If you are not racing, please register to help us! You will be right in the middle of the action! You won’t be able to find a better spot to watch these pros come in!
We are also helping to host some of the pros. If you have time and room to host a pro, please let us know. This is a great opportunity to help some up and coming pros and maybe make a new friend. I know a few people who hosted marathoners for the Columbus Marathon and I believe they said it was a “life changing event” if I remember correctly. Ok, maybe not life-changing but it could be a good experience.
Anyone who can help, please email us at centralohiotriathlon@gmail.com and let me know what you can help with.
